Hello Sasebo

From Jim Brusa, 1957

Hello Sasebo

As the Bennington pulled into Sasebo, harbor, we picked up a Japanese pilot to guide us in as we were going to tie up to the pier. Apparently the man could not speak very good English, and brought the ship in too fast. At the last minute, the captain ordered the anchor dropped to stop the ship. The outcome of all that was we dropped the anchor on a small fishing boat that was following us and we hit the pier so hard that one of the bullards went thru the #3 elevator housing and left a large hole. The fisherman was not injured but I think the US bought him a new boat. The time spent in Sasebo, was spent repairing the ship.
