ELMER ROY PETTIS

ELMER ROY PETTIS
Born, 10 JUL 1916 at Outlook, MT
Died, 2 FEB 1999 at Missoula, MT buried at Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Missoula, MT.
Notes:
Joined the US Navy in 1944 and trained at NTC Farragut, ID.
Served as a Machinist on USS Bennington, discharged in 1946.
Resided in Williston, ND from 1938 to 1960.
In 1960 he moved to Polson, MT.
Elmer was my Grandfather's brother and witnessed my Grandfather's wedding in Sidney, MT.
My grandfather was in the North Dakota National Guard (joined in 1941) and fought in Guadalcanal, later going to Burma during the war.
Just found your website and thought I would send you this update.
Thanks for the great information on the USS Bennington.
What is even more interesting is that Elmer's Great-Grandfather (x4), Stephen Pettis fought in the battle of Bennington along with some of Captain Sykes' ancestors.
The Pettis and Sykes families go way back.
Strange coincidence to find them all on the USS Bennington so many years later, aptly named for the town that many had lived in.

Sincerely,
Justin Pettis
Olympia, WA
