Bennington meets Bennington!
The date was June 3, 1966, I was about 6 weeks away from getting out.
The Captain (Howell, always my favorite) was having a special visitor, a crew member from the original USS Bennington.
When he came aboard, I saw the neat hat he was wearing, and decided to try and get it for a souvenir, maybe offer to trade him something, etc.
I didn't realize Capt. Howell had the same idea.
He took off his hat, put it on the table and tried on Van Epen's hat.
Like lightning, Captain Howell's hat dissapeared.
Never to be seen again, (well not until I brought it to Phoenix last year, and, yes, I will bring it to Nashville, also)
*** Now, this story may not be ENTIRELY accurate, but probably 98%
Only Rodney Howell and I know for sure, and he doesn't read these e-mails.
Oh, and yes, I WILL have the hat at the Nashville reunion
