AJ3 LANDING

AJ3 Landing

AJ3 Landing
1956 Oct 3 - 1957 May 23

I mentioned the other day that I had only one photo with the mirror landing system aboard. It is just forward of the LSO platform and consisted of a row of lights, simulating the landing area and a single light, called the meatball which simulated the position of the aircraft in relation to the deck. Of course there is more but it is beyond my understanding. The AJ3 pictured, had a pair of propellers and a single jet engine located under the tail section. A favorite story was of the plane flying near an Italian air liner. The pilot shut down one prop, then the other and managed to stay even with the air liner. They could see the air liner pilot speaking excitedly on his radio.
