Subject: LT. "Joe" Buice Date: Mon, 3 Jul 2000 22:02:46 EDT From: GBrown6151@aol.com To: Mikael.Gidhagen@fek.uu.se CC: Lonnie@lpwe.com, BCopeland@uss-bennington.org Mikael, I served on the Bennington from 1965-1968. I think LT. "Joe" Buice (if the same) was in the Supply Dept. during that period. He was an LDO (Limited Duty Officer) which meant that he was a previously enlisted man who moved to officer rank. At the time I knew him 1966 he probably was 43 years old and smoked a lot of cigars (wouldn't be surprised if the hat smelled of smoke)! During that period 1965-68 we made 3 tours to Vietnam and was home ported in Long Beach, CA. For your info after I finished college in 1964 I spent about a month in Sweden mostly around Jonkoping at the south end of Lake Vaten-many many fond memories. Say "hello" to all my friends. Sorry can't remember more about Joe since he was in a different department and there were probably 150 officers not counting the air group. If you want any additional info just e-mail me. Well, the thing is that I am a militaria collector and even though I live in the (at least today) chilly Sweden, I have collected a few US items during the years - primarily aviation related stuff. Last summer I spent my holiday in the USA, where I bought a pair of WWII Naval Aviator wings. As I collect "pairs" of hats and wings, I spent some time looking for a hat. I did not find any then, but earlier this year I bought the "Lt. Buice"-hat from an antiques dealer in the US - on the Internet! Nearly two months later the hat arrived, and as I was interested in finding out more, I landed on your thrilling website! In short, no exciting story to it at all, except that I have learnt a lot about an aircraft carrier of which I had never heard before! I really appreciate your help, and I certainly look forward to see what can be found on Lt. Buice!
