BUILD NEW ELEVATOR FOR CARRIER

The Naval Shipyard at Bremerton, Washington, is building a new elevator to replace the one lost by the carrier BENNINGTON in a storm in the Western Pacific.

The elevator will be installed when the BENNINGTON returns to the United States, the Navy said. Meanwhile, the ship is continuing operations as part of the 7th Fleet.

No injuries occurred in the accident and no planes were damaged, the Navy reported.

During heavy weather, the Number 3 elevator, one of those used to bring aircraft up to the flight deck, was lost at sea. Cables snapped, dropping the elevator into the water. The Navy said the apparent cause was metal fatigue in the hoisting cables, aggravated by the increased tempo of operations with the fleet.
